Sanctum

In autumn 2015, the bombed-out remains of Temple Church in Bristol were transformed into an intimate place of listening, in which to hear the city like never before. Across 552 continuous hours, Theaster Gates’ Sanctum hosted a continuous programme of sound sustained by 800 unannounced performers, musicians and bands. Directed by Claire Doherty, Sanctum was Theaster Gates’ first public project in the UK, as part of Bristol 2015 European Green Capital. Whilst open and free to visit day and night, the schedule remained secret.
